Canadian Car Brands | Brief Historical Account

At the turn of the century, people formerly worked on repairing bikes, carriages, and motorcycles, giving a shot at making their first automobile motor cars.

The first mobile was touted as Canada’s first petrol fuel motor car in 1897. The Canadian car industry was off to a perfect start.

By 1918 Canada was the proud owner of the world’s second-largest car industry but was it an Industry they could be proud of?

Not really, as the sector consisted of numerous small-time companies that only made a handful of cars yearly. One notable company was Mclaughlin.

It started as a carriage builder but transitioned into two vehicles in the early 1900s with the help of American Buick.

Buick provided much-needed car parts, and Mclaughlin did the rest.

Soon enough, Mclaughlin became General Motors in Canada, and the cars were renowned for being subtly built and rich that royal families in other parts of the British Empire took an interest in them.

They made cars under McLaughlin’s name until an American general motor bought McLaughlin in 1918.

The mark would then exist as McLaughlin Buick until 1942 when Mclaughlin parts were dropped altogether, and the brand became known as just Buick.

In the meantime, foreign competition was rising, and some other American car companies followed.

In the 1930s, due to the Great Depression, the Canadian car industry consolidated, and many small-time car makers vanished.

What remained were the big boys, mostly Americans.

The Canadian government said that the mass market’s low price would dominate the market but good quality cars from the neighbors down south.

Not only that, American carmakers used Canada as some loophole.

Since Canada was a member of the British Empire, it would take advantage of lower import tariffs from other countries that we also member, better known as the Imperial preference.

For instance, England wants to avoid a local car maker also being flooded by American cars. They insert an import tariff geared explicitly toward the USA as seen in the previous post American Car Logos | Top Amazing USA Car Logo 2023

American car companies will then make a right-and-drive model in Canada and export them through Canada to the British Empire because there was no importance between the members of the British Empire.

Canada was increasingly dependent on the United States. Only a little was produced in Canada, but plenty was imported from the US.

So by 1936, the Canadian government imposed a 35% tariff on auto imports from the USA.

However, there is a similarity between Canada’s car and the Australian car industry. This summer influenced the Canadian car industry.

With the new import tariff, Canada gave American Comics a choice.

You can either import your domestic models but expect a vast import tariff or build them locally and support the local economy.

This led to an exciting situation leading to an automotive landscape like an alternative universe planning the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

American car companies found a new loophole. Besides importing their domestic models, import tariffs are included.

They decided to launch Canada-specific models and brands with locally rebuilt cars, which is what the government initially wanted.

But these cars are essentially the same, with some little changes in the exterior look and adding a Canadian-inspired name that was regarded enough to make it a truly unique Canadian model.

Today, the Canadian car industry is rather vibrant, but threats lie ahead. Throughout time, it has always been a struggle to keep car companies in Canada.

The government made many offers to make it attractive for car companies to open new factories, and through export, Canada is very much dependent on the United States auto market.

Most Canadian car brands are sourced from the American Chrysler and Chevrolet. But they have their way of bringing uniqueness to every one of their products.

Let’s consider some of them;

McLaughlin Buick

This started the origin of Canadian automobiles in the early 1900s. It originated by Robert Mclaughlin.

It started as a carriage builder but transitioned into two vehicles such as the Chrysler and Chevrolet.

It collaborated with the Americans and became General Motors in Canada.

Until 1942 when Mclaughlin parts were dropped altogether, the brand became known as just Buick.

Canadian Pontiacs

It became Canada’s favorite brand and was considered a mid-level mark in the US. It was a low price mark in Canada.

In the early 50s, GM expanded the Pontiac model with Canada Specific models with French-sounding names like the Laurentian and the Parisienne.

In the early 1960, Canadian Pontiacs rode on a Chevrolet platform with a chevy engine but had a Pontiac body and design.

It was rebranded with the Acadian brand (a compact car and retrimmed chevy 2).

ASNA (meaning; Auto Shows of North America)

This company sold various Isuzu, Suzuki, and Daewoo models.

It wasn’t a success and existed for a couple of years before being pulled from the market.

Other Canadian car brands include the Acadian, Beaumont, Bombardier, Bricklin, and lots more.

Acadian

Acadian is one of the unique Canadian car brands produced in the mid-1900s, especially around the 1960s to 1970s.

It is an automobile sub-brand introduced in Canada due to the unavailability of the Canadian Pontiac Buick.

It was produced under Mclaughlin, General Motors in Canada, with some features of the American Chevrolet.

Beaumont

Beaumont is a mid-sized automobile. Also, a replica of the American Chevrolet was produced in 1962 by General Motors of Canada.

It is only different with its logo and nameplate and was not popular in the United States.

Knight XV Automobile

Knight XV is a high-tech Canadian automobile. It is envisioned to bring luxury vehicles based on military designs to the market.

The automobiles could be built based on the taste or description of customers. It is military-originated as it is a fully armored luxury vehicle built in Toronto.

Their central market is in China, which is known as the largest automobile market in the world.

ConQuest Vehicle

This is a Canadian automobile brand founded by William Aslan. It is also an armored vehicle similar to the Knight XV.

It is about 6 feet tall. It is made of tourist-hardened steel. A ballistic run-flat tire can still run 80 miles when punctured.

It has a night vision thermal imaging system that can allow a smooth drive at night. It has some designs that make it unique, and hardly any other countries build such a car.

Allard Motor Works

Roger Allard founded Allard Motors in the mid-1900s. Specifically around 1952. He visioned building racing cars using truck vehicles.
